Members of the Nandi County Assembly were today sworn in to take over the reins of power from the inaugural assembly that came into place after the 2013 general elections. This is the second assembly since the promulgation of the constitution 2010. It is an assembly that is full of surprises, with some of the most youngest legislators in the country originating from this County.
After the swearing in ceremony, the members of the county assembly went into their first order of business; election of the county assembly speaker. There were several contenders for this post who had put up a spirited fight with intense lobbying being undertaken by the candidates.
Joshua Kiptoo floored his closest rival a fellow lawyer by 31 votes against Kisorio's paltry 4 votes. This was a clear indicator of how the latter had outshone his competitors.
What was encouraging about the competition was that the top contenders were all youths, signifying the new urge by the youths to take over the decision making processes in the county and to a larger extent the country. It should be noted that the current governor Nandi county is the youngest in the country.
Joshua's new role will be to guide the house come up with bills that pass the legal threshold, bills that are in tandem with the constitution and guide the house in making Nandi great. This is a role that he can use to showcase his leadership skills and use it to thrust himself into the political limelight in future.
