Newly elected members to elect county assembly speakers

Newly elected members of county assembly in Nandi county yesterday converged at Sireet in Nandi to deliberate on the best way they would elect the county speaker. They were joined by the more than ten aspirants for the position who were there to highlight their agenda to the MCA'S.

According to Hon.Gideon Koech, Nandi Hills Ward MCA elect, who was among the conveners of the said meeting, the opportunity served to familiarize the leaders with the Speaker's post aspirants. "I believe that this was a step in the right direction, we want to critically vet the leaders we are to elect as possible speaker in our county." "We have five years to deliver on the promises we made to our electorate, we want to ensure that we get the best candidate,that we can be able to effectively function since we will be tabling several bills aimed at transforming our county." He said.

The race has attracted more than ten aspirants who come from all walks of life with different careers including the legal fraternity. The role of the speaker is a critical one owing to the weighty matters that are tabled at the assembly including legislation on how the billions of shillings that each county receives from the exchequer is utilized.

The law states that the minimum requirement for one to qualify as a county assembly speaker should be the same as that of the member of the county assembly. According to our sources, intense lobbying by the aspirants is taking place behind the scenes. As soon as the members are sworn in, they are expected to elect their county speaker who will in turn take charge of the smooth running of the assemblies.
